To do a clean install boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. When you get to
the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions found. After you
delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again restart the pc booting
the CD-Rom to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with your new
install.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network.

[unofficial] That's because your current version is serviced packed up to a
more recent version. You may be able to uninstall the service pack and then
it will work. Then again, depending on the scenario, uninstalling the
service pack might be impossible. In that case:

Reboot the comoputer and enter the BIOS. Set the computer's BIOS to boot
from the CD-ROM first. It's in there somewhere under some name and menu.
Save the changes. Put the WinXP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Turn off the
computer. Start the computer.

Watch the screen carefully because you may have to hit a key to choose to
boot from the CD-ROM.

When you boot from the CD-ROM you can create and delete partitions and
format during the installation routine. If the drive is large you might
consider creating more than one partition e.g. one for the operating system
and programs and one for your data docs music etc.

If you have important documents etc. make sure to back them onto removable
media or off computer before performing the installation.

Slipstream the new installation CD with SP2. Here are several links on
how to do this. The process is straight forward.
