explorer.exe constantly using 70-80% of CPU

explorer.exe excessive cpu usage

The system program explorer.exe begins using 70-80% of the cpu as shown in
task manager, shortly after booting up the computer, while the computer is
idle. It allows other programs to run fine, but as soon as they are complete
it goes back to running 70-80% again! How can I fix this? This does not
happen on my other computers.

Is your computer 100% virus and malware-free? If you think so, what did
you use to determine this? Please include the name and version of your
antivirus program.

My PC appears to be virus and malware free. for anti-virus I use Fix-It
Utilities with latest version & virus updates. I just noticed that when i
started Windows Messenger, the cpu usage in explorer.exe shot up.

If you have the option "Launch folder windows in a separate process",
Windows will launch explorer.exe as a high priority process. Use task
manager to bump it back down to normal.

This became so annoying for me that I wrote a C++ app to watch for high
priority explorer.exe processes, and bumps them back down to normal. If
anyone wants the source or binary, I will provide them.

explorer.exe is set to normal (not high); if i move it to below normal, it
still uses same amt of cpu.
