Hi all,
My computer boots normally, but after the welcome screen a lot of disk
activity starts and may take more than 2 minutes.
During this time no other task can be done.
Can some one pleas explain whats heppening and how to stop this
Thanks

It's normal for there to be a lag between logging in and having a
usable desktop. During this period Startup & Watchdog programs
will load. These are shown in the System Tray (Adjacent to Time
Display).
Things like Anti-Virus/Firewall, Printer monitors, Instant Msg'ing
and others run/initialize at this point in the boot sequence.
Windows has a tool, MSConfig.Exe that allows you to adjust the
startups. A 2-minute lag is excessive, but not uncommon if your
PC is an OEM (Dell,HP..) that has numerous startups. OEM's
generally install allot of applications that users may not need and
most of those include Startups & Watchdogs.
The symptoms can also be an indication of Spyware - so it would
be a good idea to consider installing & running the standard set of
tools (AdAware, SpyBot, CW Shredder and MS AntiSpyware).

On your desktop, select Start\Run. Type in 'msconfig'. Click OK. Select
'Startup'. This will tell you what applications are running when you boot up.
You then have the privilege of unchecking those items you don't need to have
operating on Startup. You will have to reboot after removing the items you
don't need. Of course, some of the items are vital, so you have to be
somewhat conservative in deleting. When you reboot, you will have fewer items
loading on startup.
