i have a Epson CX3200 all in one & have never used genuine cartridges. before
I could print I used to get a message telling me that my cartridges where not
enuine, & did I want to proceed, I would click on yes & everything would be
OK. Now I get 'installed ink cartridge cannot be recognised' I'm asked to
replace it, my printer is now disabled I can't even do a B+W photocopy. I
know Epson use spyware but are they able to do this? the same cartridge was
working OK 2 days ago. I have not got a spare cartridge to try.

It's a racket I tell ya.

Since I don't need colour I swtiched to laser. The cost of the ink-jet
"consumables" was driving us here right crazy-like.

Laser toner cartridges last way longer .. the cost per page is way less ..
the print is much less likely to smear.

My guess is your cartridge is bad, try a different cartridge.
Make sure the contacts on the cartridge and printer are clean.

Lexmark has no way of knowing what you are doing and no power to disable
your printer.
You problem is elsewhere.

Lexmark cartridges can be refilled.
I know people that have successfully refilled and use many different
cartridges including Lexmark.

Yes it does. It has a chip on the cartridge and two-way communication with
its print driver.

It's the Gillette business model: Give away the razor and sell the blades.

Lexmark has no way of knowing.
The printer can monitor the cart but that is not the same as Lexmark.
If the cart and printer software show the cartridge out of ink, an
appropriate step is to try another cart.

Chip resetting tools are only needed to reuse a cart with some of the Epson
carts.
No other brands need to be reset that I have seen.
A store local to me sells them for about $25.

Here's a couple of interesting related articles.

The EU has outlawed the sale of such cartridges:

HP is being sued for chips that have programmed expirations:

I have too, but I've also seen quite a few that don't work right after
refilling, but it's still worth a shot at $10 for a refill kit vs $30
for a cartridge.
