Extremely slow CD copying speeds

Although I can playback music CD's without any bother, it is extremely slow
when I want to copy a music CD to hard drive. It can actually take several
hours to copy a music CD! Same problem whether it's the D or E drive. Also
find that it takes longer to open files form a USB memory stick compared to
other PC's - slow but tolerable - the CD copying is a complete pig!! I have
deleted all games and as much junk as possible - have about 60GB available.
Hope someone can help, many thanks. PS Every time I type "from" the screen
displays "form" - any ideas out there?

some hardware details would help

Hi Richrich

>60Gb/74Gb Free disk

This disk - is it a SATA or IDE disk?
Make?

Do you have your virusscanner scanning all files, then each and every
file you copy from CD will be scanned, this is bound to slow down the
copying process.

Regards Leif.

Hi Leif - thanks for writing. Below is HDD info. Its on a Dell Dimension
8200. I'm using AVG virus scan - not sure if the scan occurs when I copy, if
so how do you deactivate it for CD copying. I used to be able to copy at
normal speeds before the slow down happened. Rgds, Richrich

Ok - I have AVG too. On my old computer I had some slow copying,
however it's twice as fast on my new computer.

In my case it has something to do with SATA disks on SATA controllers,
so I don't have any suggestions for you - sorry.

Regards Leif.

In device manager go to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers section and double
click on the channel where the CD is installed. Click on Advanced
Settings and and see what transfer mode the drive is in. Is it DMA or
PIO. If PIO that could be a cause for the slowness. If there were read
errors the system drops it from DMA to PIO.

Thanks Rock. Primary was already set to DMa but I changed secondary IDE
channel from PIO to DMA. Will try this out (what's difference between DMA and
PIO). I have also shut off aload of items in services and startup in
msconfig, uninstalled a load of games - ripping speed has got better, but
still not as fast as before)

Thnaks again RR

You're welcome and good luck. Here is a discusion of UDMA / PIO modes.
