Did a non-destructive system recovery on HP machine with XP.
Everything was fine until a short power outage....then when I restarted I
got this message on a blue screen....unmountable_boot_volume.
It instructed me to go to safe mode to start but it wont boot up there either.
cant get past this screen.
also tried "last known good configuration" on black safe mode start
screen..no good.
it just takes you back to the blue screen.
What is a unmountable_boot_volume and how do I fix it when the computer
won't fire up?

Boot with your XP CD, press r to enter the recovery console, enter
the Admin password [this will be blank by default in XP Home].
Enter the following command at the prompt
chkdsk /r

see this MS article for more details of the recovery console and
chkdsk switches

final note... I figured out how to recover the system from the intial
screen,(press f10 repeatedly). did a destructve recovery and it works fine
now.
I am lucky that all my files were previously backed up to cd.
