Hello
I am trying to remove the unwanted icons from the task bar area. (lower
right hand side of desktop), but even when I adjust them to "allways hide"
and apply they dont' seem to move.

Any thoughts on this?

Try to clear the Icon Notification List.

Use the registry,
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify]
Delete the key 'PastIconsStream' and 'IconStreams'.
Logoff and logon to have the changes to take place.

got the windows xp set up nicely and I don't want to muck up something or
delete something by mistake!

Quite understandable. I suggest you start again (your question), but this
time, when you say "but even when I adjust them to "allways hide" and
apply they dont' seem to move." can you describe EXACTLY what you do as
this should of course work.

You're talking about the area near the clock--the System
Notification Area, informally known as the System Tray?

These icons represent running programs--usually programs running
in the background, and usually programs that were started
automatically when you booted. Do you just want to remove the
icons, or stop the programs from starting automatically? Most
people want to stop them from starting.

Assuming the latter, on each program you don't want to start
automatically, check its Options to see if it has the choice not
to start. Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that
doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the
Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start
automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose
of running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many
people tell you, you should be concerned, not with how *many* of
these programs you run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt
performance severely, but others have no effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you
should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to
you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the
time. You can get more information about these with at
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.

Thanks William,

Basically the windows update icon would not dissapear even when I adjusted
its setting to show "do not show at all" but then when I switched the update
system "on" it then started working properly meaning it dissapeared as it
was supposed to. So it seemed not to work when it was in the "off position".

Its working now ok. I'm just left with the problem of trying to uninstall
windows messaging.

yes exactly so! Notificatio area, System Tray, everything seems to have its
own name.

I wanted to have them not show! The one in particular was "windows updates",
it was switche din the "off positoin" meaning it shows red as opposed to
"green", when i adjusted it so that it should not ever show, it still
showed, but then when I switched windows update into thhe "automatic update
mode" eg. green, it started working and promptly dissapeared. So not sure
what that means but thats what happened.

Thanks alot Ken,
That really makes a lot of sense, I think it must have been some kind of
issue related to the fact that
the program was switched off. And only once it was activated was it able to
work.
