Windows Explorer loosing its mind?

Can someone tell me why my Windows Explorer refuses to save its window size
and position when I close it?

When I first installed this version of XP SP1, my Windows Explorer would
save its current windowsize and position whenever I shutdown the application
and restore its window to those parameters whenever I restarted it. Now it
doesn't most of the time. It almost always comes up with the default (small)
window size, located in the middle of my screen. Once in a while it will
restore itself correctly, but it's very sporadic.

It drives me nuts!

How can I fix this thing so that it restores itself correctly all the time?
