Possible to swap XP between 2 PC's?

Scenario:
1 Pentium 3 - WinXP Pro SP2 - main business machine
1 Pentium 4 - WinXP - recently acquired secondary

Essentially, I want to swap OS's so that the P4 has Pro SP2.

Can do?

If you have a preinstalled OEM version of Windows XP
installed on the new P4 PC, then you cannot install it on
a different PC. Only if your have retail versions can you
proceed with your scenario.

The definitive answer? Maybe!

At the least you "may" have to perform a repair install of Windows XP. Then
you will have to reapply the necessary device drivers. You will also have to
re-download many Windows XP Updates.

Hi Carey,
How can you tell the difference? I have bought a Dell computer and it came
with a separate installation CD.

You know it's retail because you paid real money for it.

Not so. Besides the OEM versions that come preinstalled on
computers sold by major OEMs, there are also OEM versions that
are widely sold for "real money." In theory, these are supposed
to sold only with a piece of non-peripheral hardware, but there
are even some vendors who aren't scrupulous about observing that
requirement.

Open Control Panel - System - General and look at the 20 character
code shown in the "Registered to:" section of the Window.

If the second segment of that code (3 characters) reads OEM then you
have an OEM version of Windows XP.

Retail versions show a numeric value in this segment. I am not
certain what a volume licensed version would show.

Good luck

People who post here keep claiming that Walmart sells OEM with a mouse (or
similar non complying hardware) or sometimes with no hardware. If Walmart
does it then it must be ok they say. I live in a Walmart free (and thus
still free) country. But I am aware of Walmart's Labour practises and their
attempts to purchase US local governments.

But I don't know what to believe.

1. The person is lying or has been misled

2. Walmart does do it with wink, wink from MS

3. Walmart does do it and MS is too scared to say anything

4. Walmart does do it and MS doesn't know - time to dial 1-800-piracy

My guess is 1, 3, 2, then 4.
