Easy...

1) On the computer with the printer...

Start - >Control panel -> Printers and Other Hardware -> View installed
printers or fax ->

Right click on the printer and select sharing.

Tick "Share this printer".

2) On the other computers...

Start - >Control panel -> Printers and Other Hardware -> View installed
printers or fax -> "Add a printer" (left hand side) - > follow the wizard.

Though that advice was lacking, clrearly every computer working with a
printer needs to have that printer's software installed. What I would be
interested to hear is whether the same parameters in earlier advice in this
thread would apply to two computers operating XP Home. Could one of you tell
me about this, please?

Or one is Pro and the other is Home.

Yes it works the same way with any version of XP.

If they are all XP PCs, the software is already installed on the first PC
with the printer and the others will 'pull' it across the network to
configure it.

Well it works here with my LaserJet being connected to my XPHomeSP2
machine and my DH can use it from his XPHomeSP2 and still have his own
printer as the default.

Well some drivers are supplied with WinXP and others are loaded from the
computer which already has the driver installed. Last time I did this the
wizard took care of it.

Yes that's similar to my set up. For a while I had one printer connected to
each PC - but they were all shared so anyone could print on any printer not
just their own.

Same here, I have a WinME box as part of the network as well with it's own
colour inkjet printer but that is not shared only for the internet.
I have a colour laserjet and a multifunction printer on my box and as the
other XP only has a B/W laserjet they have file and printer sharing as DH
occassionally has to print in colour but not very often so it's easy for
him just to switch to using mine instead of his own. <g>

Does one have to have files and printer sharing set up or can one just share
the printer?

Thanks,

Alias
