Boot Up problem: USB conflicts

I'm trying to get a USB memory stick and another USB device to boot up
OK on my XPe machine. When just one of the two devices is plugged in
everything is OK. However if both devices are plugged in to the USB
bus, the machine never gets past the CMOS IDE drive check. I've found
if I put a hub between the USB device and the PC then it boots up OK.
Additionally if I plug the devices in once WPe is running things are
OK.

Has anybody come across anything like this before. ANy help is
appreciated.

Rob,

I have seen similar behaviour on one of compueters, but everything is possible with bad device firmware or BIOS.
Try using different USB stick and different USB device. Also try updating BIOS if available.

USB Hub is also "USB device" but it make certain amount of delay since BIOS must enumerate USB HUB first and after that you device
connected to it. So device has a chance to fully initialize before it is enumerated by BIOS.

Rob,

maybe the two devices together need too much power? So if you work with
the Hub and it has a seperate power supply, it works. I have that
effect with an external HD-Drive.

One other thing, the PC that I'm using has a Via Tech USB chipset on
it. I know that there are a number of supposed problems with the Via
Tech controllerever is there any specific problems?
