I've must have done something to the registry affecting my .exe file
assoictions. I cannot start System Restore or other registry restore
softwhere. I cannot even open exploer without awindow poppiong up asking me,
"Open With" and a bunch of associated options. Any suggestions on where to
start? I think if I could get a system restore completed I will be ok.

Try running the EXE file association fix on Doug Knox' site,
http://www.dougknox.com/, Win XP Fixes, File Association Fixes, EXE File
Association Fix.

Hi Rick,

Start here:

EXE and LNK Fix for Windows XP - Line 12
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

I think I paritially worked it out. This is what I did. I was able to open
a File types dialog from an explorer window (this was lucky). I followed a
recommendation to select a New entry (since my EXE was gone). Next I
selected the advanced button and picked "application" from the list. This
seems to have worked and my applications are running normally again.

Should I still run Kelly's line # 12 suggestion? Could this hurt anything?
Should I run any of the other file assoication fixes?

The only thing not working properly is using ctrl-alt-del to acess my Task
Manager. I can only run Task Manager from the Kelley's line #35. How can I
get this hot key/toggle to work again?

There is no harm in running the exe fix as it does the same task that you
have done manually.

Backup the registry if you want to later undo the changes done by the fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Help with Ctrl + Alt + Del program:
It seems task manager is missing from the path where the hotkey Ctrl + Alt +
Del would look for.

Try extracting a new copy and make sure it is in the right folder.
Start | Run type cmd and press Enter: ( Runs the command line one at a time
and press Entr )

expand cdrom:\i386\taskmgr.ex_ c:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe
expand cdrom:\i386\taskmgr.ex_ c:\windows\taskmgr.exe

Note: cdrom should be replaced by drive letter of the drive which has the
Windows XP installation cd. If no CD is supplied, try replacing cdrom with
C:\.
