Windows Freezes for 15 seconds

Windows XP (Home) freezes every few minutes for exactly 15 seconds. Then,
everything is fine again! EVERYTHING freezes up: keyboard, hard drive, etc.
HP has replaced my motherboard & wiped the hard drive clean to original
state. Internet connection is good (I have another laptop in a wireless
network that does not freeze up). Internet provider has checked mu
connection and it is uninterupted. I have also replace the cable from my
on-board ethernet card to my router. Computer is an HP Pavillion Desktop,
3.4 MH. I'm now desperate! Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Can you go to the Event Viewer and see what is marked as Error in both Application and System at the times marked when you have these freezes. You can right click on the Error line and get an explanation. Can you post back with those or The Error as listed

Do a search for the Event Viewer if you do not know it's location

Hi,

Run the edit on line 157: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note: When this happens and if you are also without sound, themes change to
classic, etc. run the edit on line 371.

Either way, run this combo in the meantime and good luck!

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, CWShredder and HijackThis:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

Added suggestions:

Windows XP Startup Programs Tracker
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_u.htm#xp_util

Belarc: For a detailed list of all installed software (that may be running
in the background causing this)and hardware:
http://www.belarc.com/Download.html

In the Software Versions section you'll see all of your installed software.
At the end of each entry is a clickable asterisk that will take you to the
folder the software is installed in.

Another is:

EVEREST Home Edition is a system diagnostics and benchmarking solution for
home PC users, the. It offers the world's most accurate system information
and diagnostics capabilities, including online features, memory benchmarks,
hardware monitoring, and low-level hardware information.

Do you have any anitvirus software running ?

Have you disabled the software temporarily to test ?
Have you tested by disconnecting the network connection ?

Also you might want to try and see the following

Try tuning down your hardware accelerator. If this helps, it's time to
upgrade your video driver.

Could be your drive is going flakey- some bad sectors- or you simply need to
defrag. Hit control- alt-delete and go watch CPU resources- to see if
anything is hogging a lot of resources.

Also- if your hard drive light stays on- does't blink- could be a sign the
drive is in poor health.
