win32k.sys stop error, blue screen

3 times in last 10 min (and several times in past weeks) i've gotten the blue
screen. on the blue screen it says:

STOP: 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0xbf837815, 0xf1f70a68, 0x00000000)

WIN32K.SYS - ADDRESS BF837815 BASE AT BF800000, DATESTAMP 422511a2

i checked the error log and it says this when i clicked on the only error
message i saw recently:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000008e
(0xc0000005, 0xbf837815, 0xf1f70a68, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in:
C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP.

i can't open this file, wouldn't know what to do with it if i did, but it's
about 525MB.

one of the times it did this, when it rebooted itself, the "windows has
recovered from a serious error" window came up, and when i reported it, it
said something about an HP memories disc program (related to an HP printer
connected to the pc), so i updated the driver in question. now it at least
doesn't crash every few minutes, but i still have not resolved problem with
win32k.sys. any suggestions?

Hi shagmasterk,

That error (0x8e) and that file (win32k.sys) often indicates a problem with
a service (3rd party remote control services frequently). Start/run
msconfig, go to the services tab. Click the button to hide all Microsoft
Services, look at what is left. Is one of them an HP printer service? If so,
try unchecking it, then click apply/ok and reboot. See if it helps.

As to the *.dmp file, that is the contents of ram at the time of system
failure. It can be examined by a debugging program to help determine what
was at fault. Often times this is overkill and a small memory dump is all
that is needed. You will find this setting in the Control Panel on the
advanced tab of the System applet. If you click on startup and recovery
settings, the option to set the type of crash dump is here. I usually just
use a kernel memory dump unless I have need to check anything larger. If
your problem continues after trying the above service steps, change the dump
file size and wait until it happens again. Then contact me at the email
address used here and I will try and take a look at the dump file for you.

I had multiple error messages like this. After 8 hours of talking to
microsoft support, deleting and reinstalling SP2, and following various
other instructions I was finally told to take out one of my 512 RAM
sticks. I have not had an error message since. Apparently, there can be
an incompatiablility between ram which will cause the error. I don't
understand the technical part, all I know is that it worked and after 6
months of blue screens I am free of the malfunction.

i am having the same problem with win32k.sys, and ive ran a google and
found that many other ppl are having the same problems with win32k.sys,
for me it usualy bluescreens when quitting a game, or shortly after, now
i know microsoft are very vauge at telling us what error messages mean,
and this made worse because the only bluescreens that ive had that
arent win32k.sys related, are blank, bluescreen, no text,
i am running a amd sempron 2.01ghz on an asus a7n8x-e deluxe mobo, with
a single 512 stick of ram and an ati saphire 9550 graphics card, the
problem is not with my hardware, and i have nothing made by compaq,
acer, or hp, as there all unreliable ****, i have updated my videocard
drivers, dx9.0c, and every other driver i could think of, i am using
SP1, because SP2 CAUSES more problems than it fixes, i am also using a
dual display setup, i have allready been told that it causing the
problem, so i turned display 2 off in windows, and it still
bluescreened, so that guy was wrong, and im not going to format,
because i aint going to backup 970gb of stuff... i have spoken to
microsoft and they are the most useless bunch of cockbites i have ever
had the pleausre of dealing with, WORSE THAN HP!!, i didnt think that
was possible, i have taken every step i could to fix this porblem, and
it still exists, so im about stuffed, if anyone knows anything that may
work, plz tell me, thanks
