Can't re-enable system restore.

Here is my issue. I have Windows XP Home and for some odd reason I think one
of my programs I have installed locked my system restore from turning off
(it's stuck in the off mode). I want to re-enable it but can't get it done.
When I click the checkmark off that is by "turn off system restore" and the
click 'apply' it give me a message that says it can't be enabled and that I
should restart the PC and try again, but no matter what I do the same message
appears. I can go into services.msc and try and manually start system
restore, but that doesn't work, either. It says the service started but
immediately stopped again. Is there any registry fix I can perform on this?
Thanks for your time.

Hi Dave,

If I understand the question correctly, System Restore is turned off,
and when you try to enable it, (turn it back on via the System Restore
interface) it will not enable.

First you should rule out virus/malware infection.
Virus and Spyware removal and prevention.

You will also want to take a look at Event Viewer for any errors, and
report back with the findings.

Hi Bert,

I appreciate your reply. I know there are not any spyware or viruses on
this system as we have just reloaded it recently and, to double-check, I also
took the HD out and hooked it up to our tech PC and ran a scan on it, no
viruses. I have ran an updated spybot search with beta detections as well as
a hijack this search and everything is normal on that end. I did look at the
event viewer as you suggested and there isn't anything error or not that I
saw relating to the system-restore. I can tell you that the system is
running zone-alarm pro here, but does not seem to be a problem there as it is
the same if I completely disable it. Anyway, Any other thoughts would be
great. I think a registry hack somewhere would help, but I have no clue
where to find it in the reg. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Dave,

Nice job on checking for virus/malware infection. That should be ruled
out.

I would suggest reinstalling System Restore. You will find step by
step instruction on the following web page.

Hey Bert,

Got off my butt and actually went to your site before I got this post. The
kelly's corner reg fix handled it, the line 278 one. Thanks for the help. I
appreciate it.

Can't re-enable system restore.
