i have a computer that is running xp home addition. the other day it stating
opening and closing non stop for a couple of hours. it finaly stopped on its
own. it did it a couple of other times but just for a little while. and i
noticed that once in a while when it was opening and closing that it had a
little cd icon appear near the mouse pointer. when it was doing this it didnt
matter if i restarted or shut down it would keep opening until the power when
off then as soon as it had power back it started again. another thing the
monitor once in a while will go black with just a thin bright light in the
center the lenghth of the monitor then it will go away after awhile. could
this be a virus or is there a hardware issue.

The CD drive behavior could be a RAT (remote access trojan) and somebody
could just be messing with you. Does it happen in Safe mode where you are
not networked? Use these tools to scan the system in Safe mode:

As to the monitor, it could be failing. I would try the monitor on a
different system to see if the problem follows. If it does not, then suspect
the video card.
