I have two questions, my ie has started requiring me to type the http://
string in the address bar since yesterday and I also have found that when I
try to reply to an email address that it opens up 65 client boxes that I then
have to close the group which shuts down explorer.
any ideas?

Spyware, malware and hackware seem to have infested your PC.

Locate, download, install, update and run

AD Aware SE
Spybot: Search and Destroy 1.3
CWShredder

sounds like you caught a virus, or some such thing...turn off System Restore
and run all your ANTI programs. Then, after you have cleaned the infection,
turn System Restore back on.

You might have been highjacked, so get something for that as well.
