My PC has started running really slow when i'm burning cds/dvds using Nero.
Basically, it's so bad that I just have to let it burn and cant use it for
anything else. I have a high spec PC and this hasn't happened before. I'm
using XP PRO. Any suggestions welcomed.

Cheers.

XP has a provision where if errors happen on a CD/DVD drive
it (XP) will lower the operating mode of the drive. Most all CD
and DVD drives should run at a UDMA mode 2 or 3. You
need to open Device Manager, expand the IDE/ATAP category
and then the channel the DVD is hosted from. Click the Advanced
(TAB) and check the operating mode. If the M/S it is on shows
PIO mode, then XP has stepped back the mode to avoid errors.
Usually, you can Uninstall the DVD & reboot - XP will enumerate
the device and it's mode should return to it's maximum setting.
Sometimes it is necessary to remove the IDE channel controller
(Primary/Secondary) for this process to work correctly.

It was "never" recommended that you use the Windows system for anything else
when you start a "burning" process. We would need to see your hardware
specifications and you would need to tell us where the CD/DVD burner is
connected.

BTW: If the CD/DVD burner is connected as "slave drive" to your hard drive,
this is your MAJOR problem for speed. It is always recommended that the
hard drives be separate from the CD/DVD burners (different IDE cables).
