Slow computer after period of no use

When I use my computer after leaving it running unused for some hours,
opening programs or switching from one to another, in fact doing anything,
is much slower than normal. After a minute or so it seems to settle down but
I get the impression that there are idle processes which get kicked out when
the computer is re-used.

Why is this?

Hi,

Check what is running before leaving it to idle. Something (possilby the
indexing service) is running and not immediately giving up its process
priority. Shut down as many programs as possible before leaving it idle, do
not exclude your AV software as it may be the culprit as well.

Hmm. Not sure about the AV as I'm on broadband all the time - although I
could disconnect, I suppose. But I'll try the others.

Thanks

Rob
