Nicola, go to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices Icon. Double Click
and under Volume make sure that the Mute Box is not checked. Select
Advanced and look for mute boxes checked there. Make sure that sliders are
up at least half
way. Check Place Volume Icon in Task Bar.

reinstall the sound card drivers that came with your soundcard or get
them from the motherboard disc if you have onboard sound.

Nicola, go back to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices and look under
Audio>Default Device. What does it say
there? Look under Hardware and see if audio codecs and Audio Codec Driver
is there. Terry is probably right and you
need to reinstall the audio drivers.

Did it ever work?
Did the cable from the CD drive to the sound card come loose?

Nicola, since I don't know what Sound Device you have I can't direct you
to the Drivers. Go to Start>All Programs>
Accessories>System Tools>System Information>Components>Sound Device>The
name and manufacture should be in
the right hand pane first two lines. Post the Name back here.

I suspect that you never bothered to contact Microsoft OR the tech
support for your computer. That is the primary reason people have not
gotten any help. This is NOT Microsoft but only a user-to-user
newsgroup. But you could try the sound fixes here.
