I have Windows XP Professional and it has just started randomly shutting down
whenever it chooses. I also get an error message that says a serious error
has occurred, giving the option to either send the error info to Microsoft or
not. Don't know if this is useful, but the "Error Signature" says:
BCCode: d1 BCP1: 8688FFFF BCP2: 00000007 BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: F9839769 OsVer: 5_1_2600 SP: 0_0 Product: 256_1

Then it gives the following two files to be included in the error report:
C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini052205-01.dmp
C:\Docume~1\UserName\Locals~1\Temp\WER12tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

I can't run any of my spyware or anti-virus programs because it shuts down
in the middle of it.

Any help??

Have you booted into safe mode to run the scans? See this link for the
stop message. Click on D1 on the right hand page:
http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

Random shut downs are often times caused by hardware problems. Have you
changed anything lately - installed new hardware? Any new software
installs and/or new drivers?

Test the memory with memtest86+ from http://www.memtest.org/. Download
a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's website and run
that to test the drive.

Oops forgot to add check for overheating. Open the case and check to
make sure all fans spinning, blow out all the dust with a can of
compressed air. Clean the fans.

There are many possibilities for 'spontaneous rebooting'. Do you notice any
POST codes when it happes (a series of beeps from the system speaker) If so,
take note of the numbers...usually they are in groups of beeps such as
3-7-1-4.

If this is the case, check with your manufacturer and see what the code
means or try to search for it online. Oftentimes it is a bad power supply,
memory, other.

Another possibility is that you could have a virus that could be causing the
reboot.

A third possibility could be that the system is overheating. You might want
to check the system temperature...often times this is given in BIOS or there
are various freeware utilities you can get which tell this. If it looks
significantly higher than what it should be, this could be the problem.
Often caused by excessive dust in the system or a bad processor fan or case
fan.

There are many other possibilities that results in spontaneous rebooting,
these are just some of the ones i've seen most commonly. Maybe somebody else
can look at the error you are getting and decipher it.

Hope that helps some,
Jason
