hello

i have been having a few problems with my pc. the problem i think is down to
a virus or spyware but i am not sure. the problems i am having are,

1, all drives and folders in my computer dont have any names but if i go to
rename then the original names are there.

2, many shortcuts in the start menu have been renamed. notepad and windows
explorer have been renamed to S, others just have squares for there names. if
i copy the shortcuts to the desktop they show the correct name.

3, if i right click something rather than having open at the top of the menu
it now has 2 squares.

4, the run and log-of buttons in the start menu no longer work.

5, if i click start then all programs there is a new folder called
scadeMyPictures. this has shortcuts to computer management and other system
management tools.

6, a few times when i have tried to delete folders an error pops up with a
red X, next to it is says scademypuctures.

so far i have ran a full virus scan and ful system scanns using adaware,
spybot and spyware doctor.

does anyone have any ideas what this could be? any help is much appreciated.

thanks

dan

seems like a virus...run your virus scan and if you find any, type the virus
name in your browser along with" removal tools" you will then be able to
download a file that will get rid of that particular virus, if its spyware
run ad-aware then spybot search and destroy

Dan - Since you have run some scans and come up empty, I'm going to make
a suggestion that is *not* meant to hurt your feelings: have a
knowledgeable friend or computer professional come over and take a look
at your machine. It sounds to me like you are misreading some things
you are seeing and it will be far quicker and more efficient to have
someone on-site take a look than to post in a newsgroup.

i have been working in the IT industry doing tech support for around the last
3 years. i have checked with some of my colleagues and they have not seen
this before. some think its a virus or trojan and others think it may be a
registry problem. i was hoping someone may have seen this before and had an
easy fix. if not i was going to back up everything and wipe the drive.

none of the problems make sence. there are folders with no names and
shortcuts in the same folder with the same name. if its any help i could post
a few screen shots.

Of course there was no way for me to know that, was there? Since you are
in the IT industry, then I guess there isn't any point in my asking if
your av is current and if you did the scans in Safe Mode, since you
would have done that as a matter of course. I'm sure you also did clean
boot troubleshooting to see what was running and found nothing odd.

Since no specific cause immediately comes to mind as in " oh yes, this
is the not-showing-folder-names worm", I'm sorry I couldn't help you.

things started going from bad to worse last night. when trying to copy files
the error box with scademypictures kept popping up, also the system would
just close programs a few seconds after opening them. in the end i had no
option other than to backup everytihing and wipe the drive.
