Microsoft yesterday released a fix for the generic host process
appeared with february win updates.

Install this update to address an issue that may cause a "Generic
Host Process" error message to be displayed after you install
security update MS05-012, or cause attachment file names not to be
displayed in Rich Text e-mail messages. After you install this update,
you may have to restart your computer.

Mine had exactly the same symptoms as many, svchost.exe problems at
offset 0x00ad96bc referencing memory 0x00000000. Mine was caused by
older HP printer drivers for a network printer that was sent out with
a printer I just bought and installed. I wrestled with it forever and
finally found a clue in the knowledge base and was able to see it as a
possibility. Installing new drivers issued after SP2 fixed it.
