Opererating system is WIN XP Home, computer is Medion M3; I got this computer
recently and the printer worked fine at first; then it started printing only
part of the text, 6 to 10 lines and then fade away.

I often get ..printer failed to print.. and the notation on the printer
LCD ..data remains... I took the printer to the seller and after repairs it
was returned to me with the note that the print head had been replaced
however after re installation it still printed a few lines. I re formatted
the hard disk and put it back to the manufacturer s, got printer driver from
Brother and still the same thing.

I changed USB port nothing doing. I took the printer back to the seller and
they tried it and it worked fine; the two Brohter printers lent to me during
repairs worked fine. I suspect a conflict between my version of WIN and the
printer driver however there is nothing on the Microsoft or Brother sites.
The seller now blames the software and Brother is no help they tell me to
take the printer to a service center but they are as confounded as I am.
Can anybody help with maybe a check list of things possibly creating this
probelm ?
Thank you

This is what it says on the Brother site:

If you install a Service Pack after MFL Pro (MFC Software Suite) is installed, MFL
Pro may not work. Please uninstall and then reinstall MFL Pro again.

There is a download for cleaning up your driver, it is imperative to completely
remove all remnants of the driver.

Dear Mary Sauer,

Thnak you for your response; I did uninstall the MFC4420C driver with the
uninstall file from Brother and then folllowed the procedure for re
installing the driver downloaded from Brother. It did not work, I then re
installed the Windows files with restore again no improvement; I then did a
full restore with format to get back to manufacturer's specs again no success.

I changed the printer cable ensuring no longer than 6 ft, changed USB port
and deleted the printer driver and re installed at least 5 times thoughout
all of this. I am completely confounded especially since any other Brother
printers lent to me by the seller work fine (2 different printers)

To me it seems either my version of Windows is not compatible or else there
is a problem with the printer; the worst of it is I keep getting ..document
failed to print ... receiving data...data remains etc most of the time but
occasionnally the document will print a few lines, and very occasionnaly the
whole document will print.

I contacted Brother, searched their data base, searched the Microsoft
database no help and any messages sent to product support from Brother remain
unanswered.

Anyway excuse this long harangue, but I am completedly frustated.

Best regards,

Claude Constantineau

Problem resolved !!!! I spent some time with a Brother tech advisor and he
informed me that the disk that came with the MFC is not compaible with
Windows XP.

He referred me to a site that outlined a procedure to delete all printer
files, PaperPort etc and it worked; the printer is back in service ...at last.

My thanks to Mr. Vasquez of Brother, he was more tha helpful.
