Weird one. When I boot up, I can't connect to the net with IE,Firefox, or
Outlook express. I press control alt delete and it shows svchost network
service cpu usage 99 %. After around five or ten minutes it goes ok.
Broadband connection through a network card.
Hoping someone has an answer.

Hi Bob,

This generally has to do with what you have running in the background. To
catch a grip of it all, check msconfig/startup and run this small tool:
Windows XP Startup Programs Tracker
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_u.htm#xp_util

In the meantime, start with running this combo:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, CWShredder and HijackThis:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

Free Online Virus Scan

Good luck and keep us posted!

Ran the spyware stuff, nothing there. I came across something on the net
about no connection with browsers, but messengers work ok. I ran a file
share program and it connected ok. Then I realised that I had updated the
file share program so I looked around the file share forums and got to
thinking about host files. One contributer mentioned that there should only
be half a dozen or so entries in the hosts file, and I had thousands. I
deleted everything but the first line, and now I get connection straight
after boot up. Thanks for the suggestions.
