Default Open Folder ??

Hi Everyone,

I have a little annoying problem and would like to know if there is a
general solution for that. It is regarding the "Default Open"
Folder...............

For example, the following programs behave like that when I start them and
click on the menu on FILE / OPEN :

Notepad ( Opens in C:\Windows )
Word ( Opens in My Documents )
Outlook Attachments ( Opens in My Documents )
Any Picture Program ( Opens in My Documents\My Pictures ) etc.

Due to web searches I tried the following :

Change the programs shortcut ( Start in ........ ) and also making changes
to the registry. But for example, Notepad is still in the C:\Windows folder
and not the folder I specified in the "Start in" shortcut option ! Same
thing happen with Outlook attachments.

So my question is : Is there somewhere in Windows a possibility to change
ALL File/Open dialogs to a specific folder or drive ? Or is there a add-on
program which will let me do that ? I'd like to have ALL programs display
the root path of my C:\ drive, so I can navigate where ever I need to
instead of navigating out of every folder to the root directory and then
going to the folder I want.

Thanks for your help.

Tom

Windows does not support this. In fact, this is an issue with the
software as the software author has to define how the application
behaves. Some programs can be set up to use a user-defined folder
(Word), others don't (Notepad). For Notepad you may want to replace it
with a more powerful text editor like EditPad Lite
(http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html).

Tom,

For Winword, you should be able to change default locations via Tools menu,
Options sub-menu. Click the File Locations tab. Choose the appropriate item
and then Modify the path.

Hi,

thanks to both of you for the reply.

Well, it's a "General" problem which effects ALL applications with a
"File/Open" menu. All theses applications are starting either in a certain
folder, the last used folder or the My Documents folder.

I wanted to be able to set a DEFAULT folder to open for ALL applications (
via a tweak or third party program ), but it seems this is not possible.

Thank you again.

Cheers,

Tom

Tom,

You're welcome. Yes, this is application specific as you've said.
