Windows Installer 3.1 - Version 2

Bit confused by this newer version of the Windows Installer 3.1

Wondering whether version 2 of this installer addresses the issues
previously addressed with the first version of 3.1 (or whether it's really
Windows Installer 3.0??)

This website

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893803

has Revision 3.0 in the top right corner, and the page contains a "New
Features in Windows Installer 3.0 link"

Also if you download the distributable version eg from here (or from the
Windows Update Catalogue)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C

right-click it and look at its properties > version, then its build date is
2004/12/06 and the support link is
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=33342
(a link to Windows Installer 3.0)

(Doing the same with the first version of this installer gives a build date
of 2005/2/14 and a Windows Installer 3.1 support link ie
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=42467 )

That is the revision of the KB Article, not the Installer version.

As WI 3.1v2 is a minor update of 3.0 and 3.1v1, I assume that MS is just
not taking the time to redo the page for the minor update.

Yes correct - my mistake.

Seems to install ok and produce an updated msi.dll, anyhow, and the support
link in the Add / Remove Programs link is fine too.

Hi,

And from
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893803

<quote>
Issue that is addressed in Windows Installer 3.1 (v2)
• Windows Installer no longer fails silently when the
installer tries to update a file that is protected by
the Windows File Protection feature.
</quote>

And the download link downloads the file
WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe, the previous WI 3.1 download was
WindowsInstaller-KB893803-x86.exe.

Just did an installation of the WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe,
and msi.dll was updated from v3.1.4000.1823 to v 3.1.4000.2435 (with
a date of 2005-05-03), so this package is definitively up to date.

Thanks for your response.

Seem to be 2 entries for the update in the registry

at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB893803

and at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB893803v2

Only the second one has a "DisplayName" though for Add /Remove Programs and
an Uninstall string

Anyhow enough of my idle ramblings

Has anyone else experienced a problem with outlook on XP Pro after
installing windows installer V2? Now, whenever I start Outlook (Office
XP Pro, not express) a window pops up saying "Preparing to Install",
and then "Please wait while windows configures microsoft office xp
professional" , followed shortly by "Error 1706 Setup cannot find the
required files..." etc.

What it wants to install for Office, I have no idea, but even after
inserting my office CD, it still claims to not find the required files.
Clicking cancel only starts the process over. It's a seemingly
endless loop. And of course, is now rendering my Outlook unusable.

This first happened on Sunday - 2 days after updating the windows
installer V2. Coincidence?? Should I uninstall V2??
