I don't know what upgrading MSN would have to do with messing up Word.
Try renaming normal.dot (use Search to find it) and see if that fixes
things with Word. If it doesn't, then post your question in a group for
Word or MSN. Here is a list of all the MS newsgroups so you can find
the right one:

AHHHHHHH, i did not think i would get a response. the only reason i blame
MSN 9.0 is because i noticed the issue when i tried opening the file i
attached to the email before sending and i got that message of "file not
available". but when i do close word down i get a message: "the file Normal
already exists. do you want to replace the existing file? do i say yes? what
do i replace it with? oh thank you for your help.

When someone tells you to rename a file, they are essentially
telling you to delete it, but it do it such a way that it's easy
to get back if you change your mind. You can rename it anything
you want; if it's not called precisely normal.dot, it won't be
found when Word looks for it, and for all intents and purposes it
wil be gone.

So rename it to anything you want, but preferably something that
will will remind you of what it was. You choose for yourself, but
a choice like old-normal.dot would work fine.
