Very frustrating, I am having the same problem. I recently had to re-install
xp pro, using the same disks as the last time I did it. Last time I used a
different piece of back-up software, this time I tried the back-up utility in
xp pro. I did a back-up of "my Documents" before the re-install, then
restored a couple of files to make sure it worked. I did my re-install and am
getting the same message as you are "The backup file contains unrecognized
data and cannot be used". Have you had any success in identifying the
problem?

Thanks
