Weird Problem

I am running XP Home + SP II with Office 2002.

I regularly use a registry cleaner, specifically JP 16 Power Tools with no
problems.

However recently I have experienced the vanishing of the drag & drop
facility in Word plus the disappearance of the icon on my taskbar showing me
I am connected to the Internet. I have deducted that this only happens after
I have cleaned my Registry. When I return Windows via System Restore to a
point immediately prior to the last Registry clean up they both work fine. I
guess I must be removing registry entries relating to these problems but I
am at a loss to know which ones. Has anyone any ideas ?

TIA

Geoff

Hi, Geoff.

These registry cleaners are notorious for fouling up. I suggest you try a
system restore.

Good luck,

Ed

I have & it works. But I would like to know the specific entries in the Reg
relating to my problem. This way I can avoid them in future.

What you describe illustrates the basic issue with Registry Cleaners.

The problem with using them is knowing where to stop (Cleaning).
They tend to break seemingly unrelated things that aren't always
apparent. The Registry is very intertwined using Class Identifiers &
obscure linking that is very easy to break.

In your case a System Restore got you back up and working. Be
thankful and do yourself a favor and stop using JV-16 Power Tools.
You wouldn't let the neighborhood 13-year old PC Know-it-all
work on your PC - why do the same with a Registry Cleaner ?

The best toolbox for Registry changes are Regedit and backups &
System Images ( to undo any mistakes).

Don't use a registry cleaner.

The use of a registry cleaner has been discussed over and over in here.
General consensus is, don't use one. They don't really provide any
value for routine operations.
