I installed service pack 2 on a HP Xw4200 and it gave me an error that there
was a problem that would not allow windows to properly check the windows
license. Other than not installing SP2 now; has anybody seen this? What
generate this error? I really appriciate your help; thanks!

Follow all theses tips, with special attention to e, f.

Safety tips for any setup of operating system / or a service pack:
(a) run a CHKDSK to make sure file system is in good shape
(b) ** backup ** your current system,
(c) turn off antivirus & just about *every user-startup app program *
in MSCONFIG / Startup Tab (1) write down on paper the "active" selections (ones with check mark);
(2) press the *Disable All* button. Apply & exit out .

(d) Use Control Panel , drill down, and be sure to turn off any screensaver.

(e) Also if you have any program that changes the splash screen, or
provides more styles by modifying the system files (especially Styles-XP), uninstall it.
Later on, look for an update from Tgtsoft at http://www.tgtsoft.com/download.asp

Another to watch is ThemeXP from http://www.themexp.org. Uninstall & only use it if fully XP-compliant.

(f) If you ever installed XP-Antispy, it disables a dll XP-SP1 needs, so
just in case, Start - Run and type
regsvr32 licdll.dll <enter>
regsvr32 regwizc.dll <enter>

(g) make sure you have plenty of FREE space & run Disk Cleanup

(h) Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32
If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Better yet, delete all the contents of CATROOT2.

(i) logout / reboot bring up Windows (to get clean start & no files-in-use),
(j) now the pc is condition to start "setup" of Service Pack
