Internet explorer runs as Explorer.exe

Hi,
I've noticed that every Internet explorer instance is now running under
the explorer.exe process. No Iexplore.exe appears in task manager. Having
more than 1 browser window open slows down my system while loading up the
explorer.exe process. I'm running Windows XP SP2.

Does anybody have any idea?

What does a scan with your current version antivirus (not earlier than
2004 and using updated definitions) show? Do the scan in Safe Mode. To
get to Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is
starting. This will get you to the proper menu.

Does the same happen if you explicitly launch iexplore.exe from Start, Run
dialog? Try what Malke said, as some Trojans /hijackers attach to
iexplore.exe as "debuggers". Here is one example:

Hi,
thanks for the answers. I've just finished running a safe mode McAfee
scan (signature of May 13) which found nothing bad. I also reinstalled SP2,
same results. I downloaded all new Windows Updates, same results. I also
checked all running processes and it all belongs to the system or other known
softwares installed on my computer.

Any other idea?

Sylvain

Hi again,
I've just found a crazy behaviour. If I type in Run : iexplore
www.google.com, IE starts in a new Iexplore.exe process but then, if I do
work in the browser, there is no CPU activity with the ie process but only
with the explorer.exe one. So if I end the iexplore process, the browser
doesn't shut down.

Thanks!

Posted this a numerous times. Seems that a lot of people are getting this
error across the boards.

You got a virus\trojan.

(1) explorer.exe
(2)SPROT.I (Trojan)
(3)BKDR THUNK.B

Use MS Spyware,Spybot,Adaware, Hijackthis and then run Sysclean_FE utility
from the address below

Hi, here's an update.

I've lost a complete day scanning and checking my computer. I used all
recommended tools in normal and safe mode without finding anything bad. I
red a lot of other posts with explorer problems but they all seems to have
error messages reported. On my side, I never had any error messages or
system crashes, the only problem I have is that browsing is much slower than
before. Images rollover uses about 20% of CPU time on the explorer.exe
process.

Thanks again.
