I routinely delete my history pages by going into intenet properties and
hitting the clear history button. This only works about half the time, if
then. Am I overlooking something? India is of no help on this one.

Now click Tools at the top of the page, select folder options, select View, select Show hidden files and folders. Click Apply then OK. You should see a folder for Local settings. Expand it and you'll find the history folder. Another way is to open search, type in history select the C: drive, Search open the history folder. It's not necessary to delt the history folder.

Really the only way to delete history in IE,is to go to run, type:regedit
In regedit,expand:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\
sessionmgr\then open memorymanagement.L.click Deletepagefileat shutdown
(youll see the abriviation),then go to edit, modify, change from 0 to1,then
close
out regedit,restart computer.The only negative,it takes 30-40 seconds more
for xp to close,it's deleting the page file.

What works every time for me is to log off and back on, and clear the history
right after any logon programs complete launching.

If I don't log off and back on, IE frequently leaves today's history visible.

I seem to remember reading something about files being in use / locked as
the root of the cause. Logging off and back on unlocks them, and history
clears fine...
