Help Undeleting a File

I have only one partition on my computer, and I accidentally deleted
multiple files via the Command Prompt. I have a file recovery tool,
however, it has not been installed. I fear that if I install it, it
will overwrite some of the deleted files.

Does anyone have any ideas - or boot disk utilities - that I can use
to help recover all my files?

Thank you!

what kind of files did you delete?

Let's just say that if I reboot, Windows might not boot back up.

run sfc /scannow and see if it puts back any of the required Windows files.
Alternatively if you know which files you deleted and want to return them to
the system then go to Msconfig\General\Expand File

John, are you worried about losing personal files? If yes, your concern is
well founded. What does the documentation for the file recovery program say
in regards to running it from floppy or CD? Some utilities will supply
their own little operating environment for cases like this.

If you are worried about losing Windows files only, perhaps system restore
would help you out. Others have already posted suggestions for this
situation so will leave it at that.

There are multiple methods to deal with potential data loss but whether
they are suitable for your situation or not depends on what you have
available to work with (backups available or no?). More details about your
setup and what kind of Windows CD you have (will install Windows normally
or runs a factory restore only) would be useful information to any that
would be able to offer further suggestions.

Install the undelete program on to a floppy.
