CDROM contents does not refresh when changing CD

I have a strange problem. If I exchange a CDROM in the CD or DVD drive, the
contents of the first CD will stay there. That is, the new CD's directory is
not read. I have the same behaviour with the CD/RW and the DVD drive.

Example:
If I install e.g. something from a multi-CD distribution, this is really
annoying and prevents successful installation sind the installation software
will never recognize CD 2 of the set.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition, SP2, all Windows updates installed.
Two CD drives (one CDRW and one DVD), both show the same symptoms. I also
used Daemon Tools Virtual CD and experience exactly the same there.

Realtime-Viruscheck is switched off. Autoplay is switched off as well.

Where could be the problem?

Any hint is greatly appreciated!

Dan

I have perhaps the same problem. Two optical drives. Both worked fine once.
Device manager doesn't detect any problems. Both drives still function
normally when I boot into Window 98 SE on the same machine. But when I boot
into XP, only discs that were present during system boot or reboot are
recognized. If I try to change disc, Windows XP only sees a nameless disc
of 0 bytes until I restart.

I've tried the autorun troubleshooter and the registry values for that
appear to be correct. Attempting to reinstall and or update drivers also
proved useless. I'm stumped. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dan,

This can be fixed using the AutoFix tool from Microsoft.

From Alex Nichol, MVP

<quote>

It may be a fouled up autoplay setting, so that the autoinsert
notification is being lost. Microsoft people have written an unofficial
fix up tool for Autoplay. Without great confidence, I suggest you try
it - it is not on a MSoft site, but can be downloaded from
Http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/autofix.exe

Thats strange, I have exactly the same problem with my two dvd
rewriters pioneer and LG. I tried the autofix tool but when I run it
its says 'this type of drive does not support autoplay settings' This
is driving me nuts

Thanks for the response Ramesh! Unfortunatley, my system is still only
recognizing discs present during system boot.

Interestingly, if I open a drive and close it without changing the CD, it
does now recognize that CD after the autofix, and it didn't before. Still,
if I try a different CD, failure.

I am having a very similar problem. Upon inserting a CD explorer reports a 0
byte disc and there are no contents. I have already run AutoFix and this did
not help. I have found several "workarounds" but I am not happy with the
problem.

Sometimes, if I login as another user (not rebooting" the other uer has acess.
More recently, today actually, I have found that if I try to access the CD
from MediaPlayer, after it tries hard to find the audio it gives up. THEN the
contents are visible in explorer (though from the top level it still shows 0
and no title).

This is extremely frustrating. I am curious if there is an explorer update
available, but I have not found it.

For what it's worth, I decided to reformat and reinstall Windows XP. With
all of the current updates, even Service Pack 2, I've not experienced any
further problems yet.
