Since we installed Apache and MySQL on one of our workstations it has
got very tempremental about either logging off or shutting down.
Sometimes the only way is to power it off.

There are no error messages on screen,

The problem started when we installed these and this is the only machine
on which it happens; so I'm betting they're related to the problem.

Is this a problem anybody else has seen before?

See if anything here is helpful:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308029

I'd also check Apache and MySQL forums/resources for possible issues &
solutions.

Nothing there which matches our situation, the computer does not error,
nor does it stop responding; it just doesn't do it! I'll keep looking :-)

Souce of problem traced to the winMySQLadmin tool - shut it down and it
stopped fine.
