Hi PC - That's correct - the installer is intrinsic in XPSP2. To re-install
it you'd need to re-install SP2 - I would suggest that you first try Malke
suggestion of rolling back to a good Restore Point (if you have one from
prior to your orginal 3.1 installation. Uninstall 3.1 first.) If that
doesn't work for you then you may need to try the SP2 re-install, unless one
of the XP guru's can suggest a better method to directly re-install the
Installer.

After reading your thread, I decided to uninstall Windows Installer 3.1 as a
precaution, even though it never caused me any problems. When uninstalling
3.1 it gave me a warning that I may not be able to uninstall or modify some
programs that had been installed using 3.1. The 3.1 uninstall appears to be
successful. It rolled me back to Windows Installer 3.00.3790.2180. That's
what Start - Run - msiexe.exe said after reboot. Is 3.00.3790.2180 the
version that's intrinsic to WinXP SP2?

STATUS
- New programs can be installed with the rolled back version 3.0.
- One program that was installed under 3.1 was uninstalled and reinstalled
successfully under 3.0.
- Everything else still seems to work

What problems might I encounter in the future as a result of removing 3.1,
or did I just get lucky since everything still seems to work? Are there any
other tests you suggest I run just to make sure everything is okay?

Yes.

It is very unlikely that you will have any problems in the future as
a result of removing WI 3.1.
