When I click to open a folder in the right hand pane of Windows
Explorer, I cant seem to stop _all_ of the Folders in that right hand
pane being displayed in the left hand pane. When there are a lot of
them its a real nuisance. Is there anyway that I can configure
Explorer only to open one file at a time in the left hand pane?

Thanks in anticipation.

Rob, try this courtesy of Kelly's Korner.
Go to Start/Run/ type: Regedit click Ok. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Change the value of "FriendlyTree" to 0. Just rt click on "FriendlyTree"
select Modify and select 0 instead of 1 for the value.

No need to edit the registry.

Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
View tab | Select: Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list |
Apply | OK

Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list
[[Click a folder in Windows Explorer to automatically display its contents
as well as all subfolders within that folder. All other folders are
automatically closed when a different folder is clicked. Click the plus or
minus sign to hide or display other folders and their contents, without
closing previously opened folders.]]

Description of Simple Folder View in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282002

Checking or UNChecking Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list
in Folder Options sets the following key to 1 (Checking) or 0 ( UNChecking).

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Explorer\Advanced
Value Name: FriendlyTree
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = disabled
1 = enabled

0 = The same as NOT selecting Display simple folder view in Explorer's
Folders list.
1 = The same as selecting Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders
list.
