I used to see the little icons in the address bar and favorites, but now
they're gone and all I have is the little "e". What happened? How can I
get the cute little icons for each site back?

The icons are deleted when you empty the Internet cache. You can use
AM-DeadLink (http://aignes.com/products.htm) to handle these
"FavIcons".
